Airport Car Parking

airport parkingMost major airports in the United Kingdom and indeed around the world have short-stay car-parking facilities for people that are picking up or dropping off passengers.  As a general rule, most airports now discourage or ban entirely the use of the drop-off zone directly outside the terminal entrance, mainly because of the potential threat of terrorism but also to eliminate traffic jams Short-stay car-parks are a great way to get around this problem and are generally affordable providing you don't spend too long in the terminal!

Upon arriving at the airport, keep an eye out for 'Short-Stay Car-park' signs, sometimes with descriptions underneath of the amount of hours you can use the car-park for (for instance, short-stay 0-4 hours, short-stay 4-8 hours, and so on).  Tickets will either be available at a boom-gate that blocks the entrance and exit, or will have to be purchased after parking from a ticket box.  Make sure you note the ticket instructions - some will have to be left on the dashboard or windscreen of your car (visible to inspectors), whilst others you can keep on your person.  If you are issued a ticket from a boom-gate (rather than purchasing one), you will have to pay the required amount upon your departure from the car-park.  Some car-parking complexes have terminals stationed outside of the car-park that allow you to pay before you get to your car, whilst others require you to drive to a manned-box for payment.
